In 1948, the Soviet Union installed a communist government in what is now North Korea. The country has been ruled by the Kim family ever since. Kim Il Sung, the founder of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), held absolute power from 1948 until his death in 1994. His son, Kim Jong Il, succeeded him and ruled until 2011. Kim Jong Un, the current leader, is the son of Kim Jong Il.<\/p>\n

Kim Jong-un is the head of state of North Korea, serving as Chairman of the Workers’ Party of Korea, Supreme Commander of the Korean People’s Army, and as head of the state military commission. Jong-un was officially declared the supreme leader following the state funeral of his father Kim Jong-il on 28 December 2011.<\/p>\n

Kim Jong-un is the current Supreme Leader or Suryeong of North Korea. He is the son of Kim Jong-il and the grandson of Kim Il-sung. He heads all major governing structures: he is General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea, President of the State Affairs, Chairman of the Central Military Commission of the WPK, and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. Kim Jong-un was officially declared the Supreme Leader of North Korea following the death of his father, Kim Jong-il, on December 17, 2011.<\/p>\n

Since the death of Kim Il-sung in 1994, his son Kim Jong-il and then his grandson Kim Jong-un have assumed the role of supreme leader of North Korea. All three leaders have served as leaders of the WPK and have controlled North Korea since the state’s establishment in 1948.<\/p>\n
