Since the Korean War ended in 1953, an estimated 30,000 North Koreans have defected to South Korea. But in the past 10 years, the number of defectors has dropped to just 1,000 per year. Why? The main reason is that North Korea has tightened security along the border and increased punishments for those who are caught trying to escape.

There is no definitive answer to this question as it is very difficult to obtain accurate information about the number of people who have escaped North Korea. However, it is estimated that between 2000 and 3000 people have successfully made the journey out of North Korea.

How many people escape North Korea in a year?

There are about 76% to 84% of defectors have fled to China or South Korea. Every year, there are over 1,000 people escape from North Korea to some of the most secretive countries in the world. The majority of these defectors are women, and many of them are sold into marriage or prostitution. Others are forced to work in labor camps.

The number of North Koreans defecting to South Korea has declined significantly, according to local media reports. Only 67 were able to cross the border and reach South Korea in 2022. This is a marked decrease from the previous year, when over 1,000 North Koreans defected. The reasons for the decline are unclear, but it is likely due to increased security measures by the North Korean government.
