Most experts believe that North Korea obtained much of its nuclear know-how from Pakistani nuclear scientist A.Q. Khan, who sold nuclear technology to a number of countries in violation of international nonproliferation agreements. Khan’s network was uncovered in 2003, but it is believed that he provided nuclear assistance to North Korea in the late 1990s. It is also believed that North Korea has received assistance from Russian nuclear scientists.

North Korea’s nuclear technology likely came from a variety of sources, including the former Soviet Union, China, and Pakistan.

How did North Korea get nuclear weapons technology?

North Korea has extracted plutonium from its nuclear reactor in Yongbyon, north of Pyongyang. It also runs centrifuges to produce weapons-grade enriched uranium, another bomb fuel. This means that North Korea now has the ability to produce nuclear weapons. This is a very serious development and the international community must take action to prevent North Korea from becoming a nuclear power.

The United States intelligence officials have alleged that the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Benazir Bhutto, had supplied key data and information regarding uranium enrichment to North Korea in exchange for missile technology around 1990-1996. This information was allegedly stored on CDs and was provided to North Korea through Pakistan’s former top scientist, Abdul Qadeer Khan. If these allegations are true, it would mean that Bhutto played a significant role in helping North Korea develop its nuclear weapons program.
