The constitution of the country provides for freedom of religious belief, with the provision that religion should not be used as a pretext for harming the State or social order. However, the UN Secretary-General has reported that the country continues to severely restrict the religious freedom of its citizens.<\/p>\n

The DPRK government’s crackdown on Christians began in 1948, after the founding of the country. Christians were seen as ties to America and the West, and thousands are estimated to have disappeared or been driven underground. Today, there are only four churches left in the country, all in Pyongyang.<\/p>\n
