In North Korea, it is very difficult to obtain a smartphone. The phones that are available are mostly cheap knock-offs of popular models. North Koreans are not allowed to access the Internet or foreign media, so smartphones are not as necessary as they are in other countries.<\/p>\n

It’s interesting to see that even though Ordinary North Koreans are not permitted to own or use iPhones, a 15-inch Macbook Pro was on display at the Kumsusan Memorial Palace as part of the elder Kim’s memorabilia. This just goes to show how much of a difference there is between the average North Korean citizen and the elite class.<\/p>\n

It is estimated that the total number of Internet users in North Korea is no more than a few thousand. It is claimed that only high-ranking officials, members of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and government ambassadors have access to the global Internet without limits. Some access is allowed in North Korea’s academic institutions.<\/p>\n

In 2002, North Koreans were introduced to smartphones. However, the use of these devices was banned from 2004 to 2008. The ban was lifted when Egyptian telecommunications company Orascom Telecom Media and Technology Holding, in a joint venture with the state, established a new 3G mobile phone service named Koryolink.<\/p>\n

As of 2022, North Korean citizens will not have access to the global internet. Instead, they will only be able to access Kwangmyong, which is operated by the country. In terms of global internet access, this privilege will only be granted to a small number of North Korean elites.<\/p>\n

Please be aware that mobile phones will not be able to be used in North Korea as there is no network coverage for foreign cards. However, it is possible to phone North Korea should you need to have relatives or friends contact you at your hotel.<\/p>\n

The North Korean government tightly controls all media that is available to its citizens, and this includes what types of television sets are able to be sold in the country. In order to prevent people from being able to pick up broadcasts from South Korea or China, the government has mandated that only television sets that operate on the PAL and DVB-T2 systems are able to be sold. This means that North Koreans are only able to watch government-approved programming, and are not able to access any outside news or information.<\/p>\n

Netflix isn’t available in some countries due to various reasons. China, for example, has strict internet censorship laws, so the service is not available there. In North Korea, Netflix is likely not available due to the country’s limited internet infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Can you take pictures in North Korea <\/h3>\n

So long as you’re not taking pictures of military installations or personnel, you should be fine taking pictures and videos in North Korea. Just be respectful of the locals and their culture, and you’ll be fine.<\/p>\n

It is estimated that only 2 percent of North Koreans have passports, and those who do are typically only allowed to travel to China or Russia. North Korean citizens usually cannot freely travel around the country, let alone travel abroad. Emigration and immigration are strictly controlled.
