There is no definitive answer to this question as tensions between North Korea and the rest of the world ebb and flow. In general, however, it is considered safe for planes to fly over North Korea. The country does not have the military capability to shoot down commercial aircraft, and while there have been reports of North Korea jamming GPS signals in the past, this has not been a serious issue for planes flying overhead.<\/p>\n

Currently, there are no commercial flights allowed to fly over North Korea. However, some airlines have been granted permission by the North Korean government to fly charter flights over the country.<\/p>\n

Can the US fly over North Korea? <\/h2>\n

The Pyongyang FIR Flight Restriction Area was established by the FAA in response to the escalating tensions on the Korean peninsula. It bans US air carriers or commercial operators from flying in the Pyongyang FIR west of 132 degrees east longitude. They can, however, fly into Pyongyang with approval from the US Government or the FAA. This is usually performed in diplomatic, emergency or humanitarian missions.<\/p>\n

The United States prohibits flights across all North Korean airspace, including the oceanic part of the ZKKP\/Pyongyang FIR over the Sea of Japan. Several other countries have airspace warnings in place which advise caution due to the risk posed by unannounced rocket launches. North Korea has a history ofLaunching rockets without warning, and these launches have the potential to pose a risk to civil aviation.<\/p>\n
