TheHermitKingdom has been shrouded in mystery for centuries, but things may be changing. NorthKorea may be opening up a new chapter, with a potential answer key to the long-standing questions surrounding the reclusive country.

A new chapter for North Korea could mean many things. Some possible answers could be that North Korea could start to open up to the outside world, resume talks with South Korea, or denuclearize.

Who won the Korean conflict?

The Korean War was a conflict that emerged after World War II. The Empire of Japan had occupied the Korean Peninsula during the war. After Japan’s defeat, the victorious Allies split the peninsula on the 38th parallel. US troops occupied the southern part, while Soviet troops occupied the northern part. North Korea, supported by the Soviet Union, invaded the south in an attempt to reunify the peninsula. The United Nations, with the United States as the main contributor, sent troops to defend South Korea. After several years of fighting, the two sides reached a stalemate, and an armistice was signed in 1953. Although the war officially ended, the peninsula remains divided to this day.

North Korea has an estimated 10-20 nuclear bombs, and has the capability to miniaturize them to fit on ballistic missiles. The last time North Korea tested a nuclear bomb was in 2017. The explosion at its Punggye-ri test site had a force, or “yield”, of between 100-370 kilotons. A 100 kiloton bomb is six times more powerful than the one the US dropped on Hiroshima in 1945.
