Social media is heavily censored in North Korea with only a handful of state-approved platforms available to the general public. Facebook is not one of those platforms. The North Korean government does not allow its citizens to access Facebook, or any other western social media platform, due to the fact that these sites could potentially expose North Koreans to outside influences.

Can North Korean people use Facebook?

It is believed that North Korea began to block Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and South Korean websites in April 2016 due to its concern with the spread of online information. On 19 September 2016, North Korea’s nameserver that contains information about all of the “.kp” domains went offline, making all of the “.kp” domains inaccessible.

As of 2022, North Koreans will only be able to access the internet through Kwangmyong, which is operated by the government. This means that content from other users or third party platforms cannot be accessed. This change is likely to impact ordinary citizens who use mobile devices to access the internet, as they will no longer have this freedom.
