In 1950, the United States joined forces with South Korea to help repel an invasion from the communist North. For the next three years, the U.S. Air Force dropped more bombs on North Korea than it had during the entire Pacific campaign of World War II, reducing vast swaths of the country to rubble. It is estimated that anywhere from 20 percent to 60 percent of North Korea’s population was killed during the conflict.

The United States dropped a total of 32,557 tons of bombs on North Korea during the Korean War.

The Korean War was a conflict between North and South Korea, which began in 1950. The war saw extensive US-led UN intervention in support of the South, while the North received support from China and from the Soviet Union. Some 1,780,000 Americans served in the war, with 36,574 killed, 103,284 wounded, and 4,714 taken as prisoners of war.

The last time North Korea tested a nuclear bomb was in 2017. The explosion at its Punggye-ri test site had a force, or “yield”, of between 100-370 kilotons. A 100 kiloton bomb is six times more powerful than the one the US dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. North Korea’s most recent nuclear test was its most powerful yet, and it showed that the country is making progress in its quest to develop a nuclear weapon that can reach the US mainland.
