Nuclear power in North Korea currently comes from five nuclear reactors. Three of these are in Yongbyon and together they generate about 10% of North Korea’s electrical power. The other two reactors, at Taechon and Kilju, are smaller research reactors.

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) has six nuclear reactors in operation, one under construction, and an unknown number of failed reactor projects.

Does North Korea have 54 nuclear power plants?

There are an estimated 22 nuclear facilities in North Korea, located in 18 different locations. These include uranium mines, refinery plants, nuclear fuel plants, nuclear reactors, reprocessing facilities, and research facilities. Although the exact number and location of these facilities is not known, it is clear that North Korea has a significant nuclear infrastructure in place. This is a cause for concern, as North Korea has a history of nuclear proliferation and has been involved in nuclear negotiations with the US in the past. If North Korea does have nuclear weapons, it is a serious threat to regional and global security.

The United States has the most nuclear electricity production in the world with 771,638 GWh in 2021. This is followed by China with 383,205 GWh. 438 reactors with a net capacity of 393,333 MWe are operational as of August 2022. 57 reactors with net capacity of 58,858 MWe are under construction.
