Since the Korean War in the 1950s, there have been no official reports of American prisoners in North Korea. In the early 1990s, however, it was revealed that some American servicemen who were captured during the war had been sent to prison camps in North Korea, where they were subjected to brutal conditions and treatment. It is not known how many American prisoners are currently being held in North Korea, but estimates range from a few dozen to several hundred.

There is no definitive answer to this question as the situation is constantly changing. However, according to various estimates, there are currently between 2 and 5 American prisoners being held in North Korea.

How many American POWs are in North Korea?

It is estimated that approximately 40 percent of the 7,000 American prisoners that were captured during the Korean War died while in captivity. The conditions in the prison camps were notoriously bad, with prisoners often suffering from malnutrition and disease. However, it is worth noting that other UN prisoners were not enlisted in large numbers into the North Korean forces or made to work for the communist war effort, as South Koreans were. This likely contributed to the higher survival rate of UN prisoners compared to their South Korean counterparts.

There are a number of American citizens who have been detained by North Korea in recent years. Some of these individuals have been released, while others remain in detention.
