Love and romance are usually a divisive issue in many countries because of their political connotations, and North Korea is decidedly no exception. Kim Jong-Un is the third generation leader of the hermit nation, and speculation as to his marital status has been a topic of discussion for many years. Much of the information about his private life, as it understandably is for the majority of North Korean citizens, remains heavily guarded. However there have been several sources over time that have shed some light on the marital status of the third Supreme Leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

Back in 2012 it was reported that Kim Jong-Un had wed a young woman by the name of Ri Sol-Ju when they were both in their mid twenties. While the media scrambling to get detailed information of the wedding ceremony, no official announcement was made by the North Korean authorities and the identity of the woman in question was never properly confirmed. To add to the confusion, continued press speculation suggested that Ri Sol-ju had become a mother before her relationship with Kim Jong-un had officially become public knowledge.

Several months later the North Korean media finally made it official, and Kim Jong-Un was confirmed to have taken a wife by the name of Ri Sol-ju who, it was reported, was a former singer in the North Korean Unhasu Orchestra. Further confirmation that Ri Sol-Ju is indeed Kim Jong Un’s wife came in 2016 when skiers from North Korea, who were participating in the PyeongChang Olympic Games, were seen wearing lapel pins of Kim and Ri Sol-Ju. The lapel pins, typically seen to be worn by couples in North Korea, suggest that Ri Sol-ju is Kim Jong-Un’s spouse.

Experts on Korean history have warned that there could be other factors at play when it comes to the question of Kim Jong-Un’s marital status. It is possible that his actual wife is hidden, in accordance to the traditional pool of secrecy conveyed upon the ruling family. Another indication of this is Ri Sol-ju who went largely unseen for years after her ‘reveal’, with no clear explanation given with regards to her absence.
