What Does North Korea Think Of Ukraine

The relations between North Korea and Ukraine have been hostile ever since the break-up of the Soviet Union almost 30 years ago. North Korea regards Ukraine as one of its geopolitical rivals, and has consistently been skeptical of its policies. North Korea sees Ukraine’s move to embrace the West – particularly its joining the European Union and NATO – as a threat to its own autonomy. North Korea has long been opposed to any progress in Ukraine that could increase the West’s influence over the country.

Since the fall of the Soviet Union, North Korea has been greatly weakened economically, militarily and diplomatically. Its economy has been greatly impacted due to international sanctions, imposed on it due to its nuclear weapons program, and its missile tests. North Korea has had to increase its reliance on its allies, most notably China, for technological support and economic assistance. China has long been a crucial partner of North Korea, but it has also been wary of Ukraine’s moves towards the West. It is likely that North Korea will continue to oppose Ukraine’s actions, as they could lead to a strengthening of the West’s influence in the region.

In terms of its diplomatic stance, North Korea has been highly critical of the West’s interference in the region. For example, it is highly critical of the US-backed sanctions against it, which it believes are crippling its economy. North Korea has accused the West of taking advantage of Ukraine, and using it as a pawn in their geopolitical chess game. North Korea has long placed importance on maintaining a geopolitical balance between the US and Russia, and does not believe that the US should be able to have undue influence in the region.

North Korea has also been suspicious of Ukraine’s new government, which came to power in the 2014 Revolution of Dignity. North Korea accused the West of meddling in Ukraine’s internal affairs, and of supporting the new government despite its undemocratic nature. North Korea believes that the West is trying to use Ukraine as a platform to further their own interests in the region.
