The plight of North Koreans attempting to escape to freedom and safety has been widely documented. The stories of former North Koreans who have made their way out of the oppressive regime of Kim Jong-Un are often harrowing and heart-breaking. With strict control over both the economic and social structure, the people of North Korea are facing increasing difficulty in finding a way to freedom.

In 2017, the United Nations reported that as many as 10,000 people annually attempt to leave North Korea in an effort to escape the authoritarian government. These refugees often engage in dangerous activities such as taking unauthorized routes out of the country, usually across the border with China. Risking capture or even death, those attempting to flee are often met with snipers and electric fences, as well as North Korean government patrols. Once in China, they face the possibility of being sent back to North Korea or facing discrimination, exploitation and trafficking.

The challenge of escaping the country is only compounded by the severe restrictions placed on communication between North Korea and the outside world. Technology such as the internet and mobile phones are not readily available and the media is heavily censored. This makes it particularly difficult for citizens to access the information they need to plan an escape. Despite North Korea having some of the strictest internet rules in the world, it is believed that some citizens are attempting to gain the information and resources they need to escape through underground networks.

The individuals who are able to escape to safety should not be overlooked either. These brave people have managed to break free from the oppressive system of North Korea. Their stories of success offer hope to those still living in the country, and are essential in showing the world what the people of North Korea are truly facing.
