With shaking hands and a pounding heart, I step out of the plane and onto the tarmac of the Pyongyang International Airport. I am finally here, in North Korea – the most isolated, enigmatic country in the world. Despite the concerns and warnings of others, I am determined to see this place for myself and to understand why it is so different from the rest of the world.
I have been intrigued by North Korea ever since I was a child, when my father first told me stories about his travels to this faraway land. I remember lying in bed, wide-eyed and rapt, as he described the towering statues of former leaders, the endless propaganda slogans, and the eerily empty streets. I knew then that I one day wanted to visit this place myself, to see if it was really as strange and different as my father had said.
And now here I am. As I look around, I am struck by the differences between North Korea and the rest of the world. Everywhere I look, there are signs and reminding the citizens of the country’s communist ideology. There are also many soldiers patrolling the streets, and the people seem to be living in a state of constant fear.

North Koreans are not allowed to leave their country without the government’s permission. Those who are caught trying to leave the country illegally can face severe consequences, including torture, forced labor, and life-imprisonment in a political prison camp.
