The United States has been working to diplomatically resolve the issue of North Korea’s nuclear program for many years. In recent months, North Korea has accelerated its nuclear and missile testing, in defiance of international law. The United States is working with our allies and partners in the region to put maximum pressure on the North Korean regime to stop its provocative and dangerous actions. We are also working to ensure that North Korea does not have the capability to threaten the United States or our allies.
Does the US support North Korea?
Since the end of the Korean War in 1953, relations between North Korea and the United States have been tense and hostile. The United States does not recognise North Korea as a legitimate country, and instead regards South Korea as the sole legitimate government of Korea. North Korea has repeatedly condemned the United States for its military presence in South Korea, and for its support of the South Korean government. In recent years, North Korea has also been critical of the United States’ decision to impose economic sanctions on the country.
However, in September 2017 the US State Department banned all American citizens from traveling to North Korea due to the risk of arrest and detention. This ban is still in place as of 2019.
How long would it take a nuclear missile to reach the US from North Korea
It is estimated that a North Korean ICBM could hit the US mainland less than 30 minutes after launch. Pyongyang is more than 5,000 miles away from the US West Coast. In January 2021, Mr Kim outlined a goal of extending the flight range to about 9,300 miles.
China and North Korea have a very close and special relationship. China is often considered to be North Korea’s closest ally. The two countries have a mutual aid and co-operation treaty, which is currently the only defense treaty either country has with any nation. This close relationship is evident in the fact that China has provided economic, military, and political support to North Korea for many years.
Why can’t the US go to North Korea?
The United States Department of State warns Americans not to travel to North Korea due to the continuing risk of arrest and long-term detention of U.S. nationals. Americans who choose to travel to North Korea despite this warning should exercise increased caution due to the critical threat of wrongful detention.
The American community in North Korea is small but significant. It consists mainly of defectors and prisoners of war from the Korean War, as well as their locally born descendants. Additionally, there are occasional tours and group travel which bring Americans into the country from China, some with temporal lodging and stay.

North Korea has also been testing the Hwasong-14 ballistic missile with a range of 8,000km – although some studies suggest it could travel as far as 10,000km, making it capable of reaching New York.

Can an American leave in North Korea?
Due to the serious and mounting risk of arrest and long-term detention of US citizens in North Korea, US passports are not valid for travel into, in, or through the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK, North Korea). All US citizens, regardless of nationality, are advised to avoid travel to North Korea. Those who do travel to North Korea are strongly advised to have a plan for how to exit the country if detained.
The North Korean government strictly controls the movement of its citizens within the country and does not allow them to freely travel abroad. Emigration and immigration are also tightly controlled. This results in few North Koreans having the opportunity to experience other cultures or visit foreign countries.

The United States is taking a number of steps in response to North Korea’s continued development of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles. These include:
• Working with international partners to increase pressure on North Korea through diplomatic and economic measures
• beefing up homeland and regional security, including missile defense systems
• Preparing military options, should they be necessary
The Trump administration is also working to engage North Korea in direct talks, with the goal of reaching a denuclearization agreement.
The United States is doing everything it can to resolve the situation with North Korea diplomatically. However, the Trump administration has made it clear that all options are on the table and that they are prepared to take whatever measures are necessary to protect the American people.
